Un-Opposite Marriage And Miss America Pageants

miss_california_2009

Who continues to watch crap like the Miss America Pageant? Who, other than people who work for Mattel or who own Mattel stock, likes to watch these Barbie shows brought to life. With big perky boobs and long legs as if off the same assembly line these Stepford Wives wannabes come from a very narrow definition of what it means to be beautiful deeply rooted in an appreciation for Caucasoid standards of beauty. I have to admit I watched this horse and pony show about four decades ago. I couldn’t even tell you who was strutting her stuff across that stage then.

I have to admit that I was as surprised as anyone else when Vanessa Williams won the pageant all those years ago. I also have to admit that I was disappointed but not surprised to see Ms. Williams attacked for the nude photos spread in Penthouse Magazine and subsequently pressured to resign her title. No surprise that she is probably the first person most people can think of when asked to name a former Miss America. But even Ms. Williams comes from a narrow definition of beauty that is more Caucasoid than Negroid.

So Miss America as an institution that represents America’s value of beauty has long ago been kicked to the curb in my humble opinion. It serves as a testament to a bygone era of white privilege and insensitivity that will eventually dry up if given enough time. Considering the amount of money it takes to continue to produce this precursor to the modern day reality show it’s only a matter of time before the plug is pulled on whatever life support that continues to keep this show going. But right now, it comes back every year like a bad Halloween movie.

Last night I watched an excerpt of the latest edition of this program on MSNBC. Miss California, Carrie Prejean of San Diego, came in second for the national title and people were asking did her answer to the question should all fifty states legalize same sex marriage. The following is Ms. Prejean’s somewhat less than thoughtful reply.

“Well, I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what? In my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be, between a man and a woman. Thank you very much.”

Compared to notable conservatives like anybody in the Republican Party leadership, Ms. Prejean’s reply sounds virtually gaffe free. Opposite marriage is a Ms. Prejean reference for heterosexual marriage I’m sure. But it also shows the hypocrisy of people who think America is so great and wonderful and free and the come right back and say that their personal beliefs are the only beliefs that should be allowed to be exercised. We believe we are the freest country in the world and then we promote concepts that are designed to discriminate against people who don’t share our values.

This is a country where some of us believe god has given us the right to decide what god and doesn’t like. These are the same type of people who back in the day would go around saying that god doesn’t want black people to be free or the equal of white people so America has to keep institutionalized slavery. And now, these people have turned their standing as hateful mouthpiece for god to the issue of homosexual marriage. God is all powerful and all knowing and will punish those who disagree with him but in the mean time we have to do god’s work because we know god is a procrastinator who all too often doesn’t work fast enough for our taste.

America is great and America is wonderful and in America you are free to be anything you want to be except for gay or lesbian and married in an un-opposite kind of way. Such is the way of social conservatives. In America you are free to be a hypocrite as long as you are a hypocrite for god.

But like most things of a socially conservative nature that are founded on baseless assumptions of what god wants and/or what is good for our country, the idea that marriage as an institution is under attack because people who have a different sexual orientation than most want to marry will past. It will fade away to the reality that homosexuals marrying will make no difference to the vast majority of people who live here. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and say it will make no difference to anyone’s god. The only difference will be that when we say we are a country that respects people’s freedom, we will be a little closer to being something those words accurately represent.

Ms. Prejean is a throwback to an era that is quickly coming to past. In that respect, she is the very epitome of the Miss America Pageant, a program that has long outlived its relevance as a standard in the American way of life.

  1. Stop picking on people that have a different opinion than you. She was honest and you are critical of her for that. Do you think that everyone should just embrace your acceptance of gay marriage because that is what you think?!! If the states have referendums and people then vote to not accept gay marriage, then that is DEMOCRACY!!!!! I guess you don’t belive in that and just want the unelected courts to impose your left wing point of view in goverment like that idiot Perez Hilton!! How does a conceited moron like that become a judge on anything anyways? I think you and him should keep your opinion to yourselfs and leave the girl alone.

    • Thanks for the feedback George,

But why are you picking on me simply because I have a different opinion than you? I’m just being honest about how I feel and you are critical of me for that. Do you think everyone should embrace your acceptance of less than average IQ beauty contestants because that is what you think? If television shows broadcast images of opinionated blonds then that is FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION! I guess you don’t believe in that and just want the court of public opinion that agrees with your narrow definitions of freedom of speech to impose your right winged point of view on television like those idiots who participated in the swim suit competition. How does a conceited moron like yourself become so judgmental anyway? I think you should keep your snobbish, opinionated, and blatantly hypocritical opinion to yourself and leave other people alone.

  2. I think Mr. George proved your point. Brotherpeacemaker.
So, just because she’s honest that makes it alright.
It’s time for America to live up to her boasting.
It always trips me out that people are soooo freaking against opposite marriage… How does that affect you? If you’re not opposite heterosexual then stay out of people business. These same people will throw a gasket if people started talking about taking their guns and alcohol… but we’re so afraid of the gays. We’re so enlightened by the bible and the other made up stuff that we claim to know what GOD loves. In reality GOD loves us all. or we wouldn’t be here. If you believe the hype. HA!
    Crazy.
Anyway, the Miss America Pageant is some bullshit. I wish it would go away already.

    • What could Ms Prejean have said to appease the whole world? She was asked a question and answered it honestly. Her answer my have cost her a crown, but her eternal crown awaits her. She’s really lost nothing of value. If there were more uncompromising people like her, the world would be better off. God called homosexuality an unnatural
passion and desire(Romans1:24-27), a sexual perversion(1 Timothy 1:10)and said that homosexuals will not enter the Kingdom of God(1 Corinthians 6:9-10) Ms Prejean is not the creator. She just abides by His laws. You may condemn her for standing up for what’s right in this perverse generation, but she will be rewarded on that last day. She was not unkind with her answer. That’s so much more than can be said for some of the remarks to her honesty. You go girl. Don’t let anyone corrupt you. Continue to lovingly stand up for what’s right!

      • Thanks for the feedback Norma,

But it is only through a twisted form of illogical thinking can discrimination and prejudice against gays and lesbians be called lovingly standing up for what’s right. If being discriminatory against gays and lesbians is the way for people to get an eternal crown and their reward in heaven I’d rather take hell any day of the week. You may admire Ms. Prejean for her honesty, but you have to admit that her form of honesty pales in comparison to the honesty people in the homosexual community exhibit. It takes courage to admit to a different sexual orientation from most and deal with people like Ms. Prejean and others who are encouraged to hate in the name of god.

  3. “These same people will throw a gasket..”

From the Department of Unsolicited and Useless Information: It’s blow a gasket.

That being said, here’s my take on the whole thing. Beauty pageants are pretty much stupid in my opinion. If they were forced to play tackle football on stage, it might pique my interest for a few minutes, but eventually I’d give up hope on this type of show anyways.

As for her answer, the judge asked for her opinion, which she gave, I don’t think she can be docked for believing in straight marriage (or opposite as she put it..a little strange, but I dont think she planned her life around intellectuality to begin with so whatever). Now if she gave some scripted response that evaded the question or she was shown to be outright lying about her opinion, that’d be another thing….but like I said….the whole beauty pageant concept is pretty dumb.

  4. I agree with George and with John, who wrote about the judge using his position to further his own agenda, which has virtually nothing to do with the traditions of the Miss America Pageant. That organization has helped countless people in countless ways, including scholarships, fund raising for underprivileged people, etc. It truly has been about good will. But, as ususal, the homosexual community has got to draw attention to itself in any way possible. As for you, what do you know about the IQ of the contestants, and what do we know about your IQ? It is apparent that you have one thing on your mind and know very little about freedom, IQs, my God, and much much more. Too bad you are so ignorant about so much. By the way, your command of the English language is as underwhelming as your humility and sensitivity to diversity. Apparantly, your version of diversity is a one-way street.

    • GMC,

Why don’t you name the ways that this so called pageant has helped so many… IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY? You can sit back and act like YOU know so much when it is obvious that you know nothing. The Miss America Pageant is and always will be a throw back from the Jim Crow era and I guess to you that is fine since it didn’t damage any one you care about. And you have some kind of nerve to talk about sensitivity.

I guess we should all look fondly upon other throw backs from slavery, Jim Crow and any other racist laden programs from the past that continue to this day. How sensitive of you! You claim: “But, as usual, the homosexual community has got to draw attention to itself in any way possible.” (emphasis is mine) UH, WHAT?!? How stupid can you be? She was asked a question and she CHOSE to be intolerant and show her ignorance. Whose fault is that besides her own?

And then you come here with some kind of nerve and start trying to comment on others’ English skills as if you are a professor of English. With by the way you write I highly doubt it. And if you are, then this would explain the plethora of idiotic thinkers we have roaming the blog circuit. HA, what a joke. And by the way, apparently your version of diversity is a dead end street. Because it seems to me that excluding homosexuals would not be a good sign of diversity.

So, please take George and go crawl back under the discriminating rock you both came from. And you agree with John, John who? Is this more of your great writing skill?

Thanks but no thanks to discrimination and stupidity.

    • Thanks for the feedback GMC,

I really should know better than to respond to anyone named after a truck. But here goes…

What do we know about your IQ or more appropriately lack thereof? Your intelligence can probably be summed up best by that old truck commercial with the Bob Seger song…Like a rock!

And by the way, I’m sorry if my command of the English language is so underwhelming. Not everyone has the intellect of a Miss America Pageant contestant from California. I guess it would have been better if I started my article with, “In my country, in my family, I think…” There go my chances for that Pulitzer.

And apparently your version of diversity is akin to a GMC dealership, only one brand and going out of business fast.

      Peace

      • Thanks for the feedback theblacksentinel,

But the John that GMC was referring to was probably her husband or her number one customer. He left a comment that was very underwhelming with his use of the English language. I’d rather sit and watch a Miss America Pageant marathon than let his less than helpful tripe stain my blog. I must say I am always amazed to see the depth of some people’s arrogance and ignorance. I learned some time ago that some comments just aren’t worth the effort for anything other than a good push of the delete button.

  5. You know people such as George feel that everyone needs freedom of expression, well except for BrotherP. Somehow others are allowed to express themselves but then no one else should be able to express anything about what they said.

Hmm, very interesting. I think I need an aspirin.

    Thanks.

  8. I don’t see what the problem lays on these comments and issues. Last time I looked around we live in the U.S.A. and we as Americans have the right to have our own believes and say what we have to say. Perhaps that is why I am now a retired dissabled American Soldier, so others can live a FREE LIFE. If you don’t like it, MOVE OUT of this Country.

  9. Thanks for the feedback SGT Estela,

But you see a problem with my comments. The last time you looked around we lived in the USA and we were supposed to have our own beliefs and all that other patriotic shit you talked about. But because you don’t like what I have to say you want to tell me to move out the country. Why don’t you get out the country? You’re now a retired disabled soldier so I can live a free life. So suck it up and shut it up. I’m free to do and say what I want. Or does freedom only exist for people who think like you do, very small and limited?

    Peace.

  10. Gay marriage will be legal in all 50 states within 5 years. Recent polls show that the number of people who consider themselves religious is dropping and once that happens, the USA will be a place where choices are based on science and not some made up god.
The fact is, gay people are just as much a person as you and I and they deserve everything that you have.

  11. SGT Estela,

How ridiculous can YOU be? You say that here in the USA we have the right to say what we want, then you turn around and say that if BrotherP doesn’t like what that lady says he should move out.

Doesn’t that reek of hypocrisy? Shouldn’t he have the right of free speech to say that he doesn’t agree or like what she says? And if you or her don’t like it shouldn’t YOU then take your own advice and move out?

See that is a slippery slope that you seem to want to play around on. And if freedom is so important to you, then shouldn’t homosexuals be FREE to love who they choose? Or is the only freedom you see fit to protect are people who agree with your archaic thinking?

This is the problem in this country, people like you act as if just because you are a vet somehow your freedom or your thoughts have more weight than anyone else. Well guess what? I have a lot of vets in my family as well. And they fought for the MY right and the rights of those like BrotherP who have an opinion differing from you and Miss Idiot from California.

So, next time look up what freedom means before you tell people that if they don’t like this or that they can move out of America.

    Thanks.
