Racism Inside And Out

There is a scene in the original Matrix aboard the Nebuchadnezzar with Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, and Cypher, played by Joe Pantoliano. Neo looked at the various views screens Cypher was using to monitor the activity within the Matrix. All Neo could see where a series of repetitious symbols and couldn’t make heads or tails of what he was looking at. Cypher tried to explain to Neo how it just becomes natural that he will learn to translate the code into what it represents in the Matrix. Later in the movie Neo has his epiphany right after he recovers from a gunshot from Agent Smith. Not only does Neo learn to translate the code into what it represents, he can no longer see the representation without seeing the code. In other words, he sees the world of the Matrix as the bits and bytes that it really is and the façade of what he used to perceive as reality is no longer seeable. This was the subject of an article written back in March titled the Matrix.
When an individual experiences their epiphany to western culture, they will be able to see the code of racist perceptions and propaganda being emitted in nearly every insignificant dribble coming at us though out the spectrum referred to as media. Sometimes it is very subtle. There was an advertisement for some kitchen product in a magazine I saw once. I can’t remember the product. It could’ve been kitchen sinks or cabinets or linoleum. But I do remember that there were three couples in the advertisement. Two of the couples were white while the third couple were obviously black but very light complexioned. Everyone was smiling and having a good time. The man and woman of the two white couples were paired up and touching each other, making physical contact with each other, one couple would have the man’s arm around the woman while the other couple was holding hands and making eye contact. But the black man and the black woman were on opposite sides of the kitchen, on opposite sides of the photograph, not even acknowledging each other. The black couple was clearly focused, almost enviously, on the playfulness of the two white couples. The black couple was smiling just as big as their white counterparts, but they were clearly just admiring the moment of frivolity instead of partaking.
But, sometimes the racism is very bold and blatant. Like the advertisement featured in the photo above (the photo came courtesy of Field Negro) showing the image of six muscular black bucks who appear to be bowing at the feet of some dorky white guy with the smuggest of attitudes, who’s obviously pulling their strings. The message is white brains behind black brawn. The message is a reinforcement of the propaganda of the NFL faked for years that it took a white man to be the quick thinking quarterback to the otherwise all black lineup. It takes a white coach to win an NBA title with an all black starting lineup. And the fact of the matter is that if this white guy did have a small business that required six employees he would never hire six qualified black people as his only employees. After all, white people are rarely comfortable in an environment where they are outnumbered by other ethnicities unless they are armed and armored.
Intel can profess naïve ignorance in the entire matter. But Intel cannot dismiss the fact that this particular advertisement was suggested, approved, fully developed, distributed, and then somebody thought that it may be insensitive to African Americans and it needs to be recalled. I may be a little harsh in my judgment but Intel is far from being a neophyte to the world of advertising. This entire incident is much more than just a reenactment of the original GEICO Caveman commercial. Somebody in the corporate world at the Intel corporation headquarters has some latent insensitivity to the black community. But Intel is far from being the only one.
Like the ubiquitous green code of the Matrix racist propaganda is emanating from just about any and every corner of existence that is intertwined with the white dominated corporate world. Corporate America could not care any less if black people are offended or not. The corporate community knows that the collective voice of anger of black people is far from being unanimous. If this was to get national attention there will be some black pundit that would be more than happy to tell black people to get over themselves and look at the messages from gangsta rap. Oprah will be ready to do her groundbreaking show entitled, “Are Blacks Fair To Intel”.
Corporations know that the black community’s collective memory is short. Today it’s Intel. Tomorrow it’ll be somebody else who is brazen enough, following the example of Don Imus, or supposedly just incompetent enough, such as this latest example from Intel, to let insensitive and insulting messages regarding African Americans slip past their corporate gates and into the public domain. It’s not an accident. It is typical racist American propaganda.

Well put! I really agree with the Matrix analogy. People are constantly complaining that we as blacks read racism into every little aspect of life. But the sad thing is racism is put into every little aspect of life. When we blacks can as a whole get our collective head unstuck from our collective butt then we can start working as a unit to put a stop to this garbage.
The white community would not put up with this crud if blacks were aggressively pursuing the inevitable destruction of “their” collective image, so why should we. This is just another subliminal means of keeping peoples eye focused on white superiority and black inferiority. If they didn’t want it to come across so racist they could have taken simple steps to make it right and still keep whatever message they were going for.
You are right every black conservative or just some lame idiot like D.L. Hughley would be everywhere cheesing and grinning about something stupid they can glean from this overtly racist ad. But, people will believe whatever they want or actually whatever the latest spin doctor tells them.
Great post!
Feeling insecure again, huh?
If this was an all White ad then it would be said that Intel never puts Black people in their print ads.
We are not allowed to look at the context of the add, only the fact that the superior White man stands tall while the one Black guy, duplicated 5 times is subordinated to him…..in your mind.
What if this was a picture of Carl Lewis or Michael Johnson or Jackie Joyner Kersey? Despite the fact that all of them are Black and Multi-Millionaires while the White boy in the kacky slacks and shirt makes $45,000 at the most STILL would not allow you to place them into their proper power relationship respectively?
The black couple was clearly focused, almost enviously, on the playfulness of the two white couples. The black couple was smiling just as big as their white counterparts, but they were clearly just admiring the moment of frivolity instead of partaking.
And no doubt this is MORE OFFENSIVE to you or possibly even the cause of our 70% out of wedlock birth rate?
I understand you in an increasing amount as you post.
You just want to be RESPECTED BY WHITE FOLKS, don’t you? I failed to appreciate how much this means to you and how much of a void you have.
This picture will fly by most people in that Intel has no history that should have you to think the worst case of this photographic arrangement. How about starting a letter writing campaign to the ad agency and let them know that no Black image should be in a print ad unless it passes your inspection of Black sensitivity?
Why should I not feel insecure when all this propaganda is around me making me feel insecure? Why don’t you feel insecure is the question I need an answer for. Day in and day out we see images of racist propaganda all around us. It enters our conscious and subconscious. It effects our psyche and lowers our opinion of ourselves. You post numbers about babies born out of wedlock but refuse to do anything about the propaganda that drives our opinion of ourselves low enough for this to happen. You still insist on blaming the victims of it.
It must be wonderful for you to go throughout the word as blind as you do celebrating your good fortune in America on every holiday that white people tell you to do so. White people love strapping black people such as yourself who benefit from their benevolence. I don’t know the psychology behind your assertion that I’m trying to win white people’s respect. But considering how you buck and dance to defend white people’s honor I’m sure it has something to do with a transfer of emotions.
Of course the picture will fly right by most Americans. That’s the very problem I’m trying to bring attention to. You really have this white worship thing down to a fine art. Advertisements without a single black person in them would be more preferable than this. They happen all the time. Where are your statistics on the number of advertisements without a single black person that the black community is protesting against? I can understand the corporate world’s insensitivity to black people. But you and the black people just like you are an absolute marvel.
Peace
Racism in the corporate world is tolerated. The media is prejudice, just walk inside any top-tier media organisation, and you may see the odd one or two black person in roles like secretarial work, working at the coffee bar, or security. How many would you see as Columnist, Ad Execs, Editor and other roles that carry clout. “Why in this day and age, after everything our parents and ancestors had to face, why is it that black people are continued to duped as stereotypes — the doers (followers) — and white people shown as the leaders” when will the media see beyond colour. Its not just the media either, take the corporate world in the UK black executives are far and few. On paper you’re great, but when you get into the interview its another story, half the time the interviewer passes on some generic feedback that you didn’t have enough this/that – funny that it was your CV that got you to the interview ??? So yes, are we in the same place that we were in the 1970’s yes we are, we are given a taste of what we can aspire to but that often means going into business for yourself. Wherever a role requires you to influence other people behavours you can be sure a black person would be pass over for a white person. I have come to understanding that the corporate world view of a highly intelligent assertive black person is perceived as a average joe white person. Where the many openings of doors is closed, your face doesn’t fit, no matter how much diversity the organisation keeps ramming down our throats. I am reside to the fact that until we are treated as equals we will continue to see black people as objects of the white man(woman) entertainment (sports, singing) without the black shoe-shine face and the over-emphaised white protuding lips, or the bone through our nose and golliwog hair. Being black means we’ve had to accept things as they are and move on so why can’t they.
get over color, just be a man and prove to the world that you are more than your skin. don’t look for racism in every aspect of your day, look for ways that you can show racist morons that skin color should not set people apart or determine their abilities. I dislike racism and its a difficult thing for stupid people to grow out of, i wish people couldn’t see skin color and such. I don’t think that real equality will come about until a few more generations pass away, my grandparents are racist and will make small comments about Blacks, Latinos, or Asians and it offends me. I just want to yell at them for having white skin to see how they will react when they are pointlessly criticized for the skin that they were born in. that’s my opinion, I just wish i could make a difference.
Sarah,
Unfortunately people can see color. And in fact it doesn’t matter if a few generations die off because they have already sown the seeds of hate and prejudice into the generation after them. So it will continue, racism is bred not born.
Also, you say just be a man and prove to the world that you are more than your skin. How is that done when the majority of people in the path of people of color just so happen to be made up of the majority race. Many of who have had a racist upbringing. Even those who claim that they are above racism still harbor stereotypes that can and will prove to keep minorities out of positions where they CAN prove themselves.
Or you have those who will attribute any accomplishment such as getting a job to affirmative action. Or that they aren’t as qualified as their white counterparts. These are things that trying to do your best to show your abilities and prove yourself will not work to stop or fix. You can’t get your foot in the door of a company that is full of people with thoughts of blacks as stereotypes.
Thanks
Thanks for the feedback Sarah,
I would like to get over color and racism. But it’s rather difficult when the dominant community sees black people as some kind of parasite on civilization. John White was a black man who thought he could just live his life in a predominantly white area and just be a man. But white people brought their racism to his doorstep and the man is now sitting in prison because of a drunk white posse. We can all bury our heads in the sand and keep them there as they pick us off one by one. Or, the black community could come together like it did in the fifties and sixties and demand change. Back in the day black people made a difference instead of just saying get over color.
Peace
Since this little passage began with a reference to ‘The Matrix’, have you noticed how all the bad guys are white (except for one Asian, in the second one), and all the good guys a nice Benetton advert? How many people did you hear complaning about that? I heard none, and I only noticed this yesterday, having a Matrix marathon. No, problem, I think, yet strange. And I suppose, had all the bad guys been black, a similar non-reaction would have occured? You see racism because you look for it; don’t look for it, and you won’t see it. I stayed in many countries, for numerous years, where I was one of the few white men; I got stared at, and stereotyped probably worse than any non-white would get in any western country. Get over it, or go someplace where you are a majority, be it a community or a country. If you obviously look different, until your relatonship goes into a more personal stage, you will be treated as such. I’ve experienced much more racism in Africa, Arab and Asian countries than my equivalent in the west- grow-up!
Thanks for the feedback Sylvian,
All the agents were white probably because they represent the dominant community that is typically controlled by white people. Duh! And as far as noticing that all the agents were white, you were the one that provided that little tidbit of information. Even you see racism. So as long as people do racist things, other people are going to notice it. Why don’t you get over the fact that manifestations of racism exist. Why do people who point out racism are the ones who are told to grow up while people who tolerate racial disparity assume that they have the moral ground. My suggestion to you would be to grow up and shut up. You got stared at in Africa? Probably because you were acting like the white jerk you are.
Peace
Sylvain,
What makes you think that you know better what is happening to non whites in the west? Have you somehow walked a mile in the shoes of a non white person in the west? I doubt it, so we both know that you are full of rubbish.
Also, being stared at is NOT the indicator of all things racist. If that were the case then blacks who live in all white towns would have you beat hands down. Not only do the stares but whiter kids point and you even get the nasty name calling. But of course you know that already having spent time as a non white in the west.
How come we can never say that if someone is struggling with being the minority due to racism it is time to change the majority into being more accepting and less prejudiced? Why is it that the person being victimized by racism has to leave and find somewhere that they can have the majority over others and stare. How sick can your thinking be.
Maybe this attitude is the reason why racism is still so pervasive. So until this type of attitude is changed others will always notice the racism they produce.
Thanks.
